At Strategic Talent Partners, we believe leadership is the most powerful lever for growth – and it needs to evolve as your business does. That belief led us to develop the Growth Leadership Model™, a framework based on 25+ years of real conversations with business owners navigating growth and change.
The model outlines four distinct stages of leadership evolution: Foundational, Emerging, Scaling, and Enterprise. Each stage calls for a different approach – and each builds on the one before.

- Focus on shorter term growth plan
- Flat structure
- CEO/Owner involved in day to day
- Multi-functional leadership
Emerging

- Plan for 3+ year growth
- Introduce middle management
- CEO/Owner/Leaders specialize in functional leadership

- Plan for 5+ year growth

- Reassess and reinforce cultural alignment at scale
Let’s start with where many great growth stories begin: the Foundational Stage.
The Foundational Stage: Leading Individuals
In the Foundational stage, companies are small, fast-moving, and often led by a hands-on founder or CEO. This is the phase of leading individuals – where leadership happens person to person, and success depends on energy, trust, and responsiveness.
Teams tend to operate with a flat structure, few formal processes, and a CEO involved in nearly every decision. Leadership is multi-functional, and the focus is on shorter-term growth plans – proving the model, closing sales, and gaining traction.
This stage is exciting. It’s fast-paced. And for many of our clients, it’s also deeply personal. But what worked to get you off the ground can quickly become limiting. As your team grows and the stakes rise, so does the need for clarity, structure, and delegation.
In fact, research shows that early-stage businesses often hit a wall around 20-30 employees – not because of their strategy, but because of leadership strain. Decisions slow down, roles blur, and founders feel stretched thin.
That’s not failure. It’s a sign your leadership model is ready to grow.
What to Prioritize
- Establish Leadership Clarity
Define who’s responsible for what in order to reduce bottlenecks and build early accountability. Start with a simple roles matrix or accountability chart to create focus. - Build a Basic Structure
Introduce simple rhythms – like weekly team check-ins, shared goals, and designated leads – to create consistency. These habits build muscle for the structure you’ll need later. - Support Multi-Functional Leadership
Team members wear many hats. Support them with coaching and clear priorities so they can lead, not just execute. Founders also benefit from learning to delegate – even when it’s uncomfortable. - Stay Focused – but Forward-Thinking
Continue prioritizing immediate wins, but begin thinking 12–24 months out. What roles will you need? Who can grow with you? A basic future-state org chart is a helpful tool at this stage. - Make Culture Visible
In early stages, culture is lived more than said. Begin defining values explicitly to anchor your team as it grows. Think of culture as your operating system – simple but scalable.
How STP Helps
We work with Foundational-stage leaders to:
- Clarify growth goals and leadership structure
- Identify emerging leaders and development needs
- Create an early org design that scales
- Reinforce culture through intentional practices
We often serve as a sounding board for founders navigating this shift. Whether it’s time to hand off part of your role or design your first leadership team, we help you make the right moves at the right time.
If you’re starting to feel stretched or uncertain about what’s next, we’re here to help you build the leadership foundation that growth demands.
Final Thought
Founders in the Foundational stage are doing it all – and that’s something to be proud of. But as the business grows, your leadership needs to shift from doing everything to building a team that can do more, together.
It’s not about losing control – it’s about gaining capacity. When the right structure is in place, you gain time, clarity, and momentum.
Let’s build the leadership foundation that lets your people – and your business – grow with confidence.
